Craiova Art Museum — Jean Mihail Palace

Craiova's cultural jewel. The palace was built between 1898 and 1907 according to the plans of the French architect Paul Gottereau, for Constantin (Dinu) Mihail — "the Nabob of Wallachia". The fascinating interior includes Carrara marble, Murano crystal, Venetian mirrors, Lyon silk and gilded stuccos. The plan resembles that of the Château de Cheverny on the Loire Valley.

Since 1954, it has housed a heritage of over 8,000 works of European and Romanian art: Theodor Aman, Nicolae Grigorescu, Stefan Luchian, Nicolae Tonitza — and, the supreme attraction, 6 original sculptures by Constantin Brancusi.

Constantin Brancusi Cultural Center

Inaugurated on September 15, 2022 in the courtyard of the Jean Mihail Palace, designed by the architect Dorin Stefan. A 12-meter high glass prism — a work of art unique in the world — containing monumental interpretations of the works The Ovoid and The Maiastra Bird.

Under the prism: a subterranean gallery created through 10,000 m³ of excavation, with details about the life and work of the Sculptor of Light, and an open-air amphitheater for shows and screenings.

💡 Guide's Tip

Start your visit with the Brancusi Cabinet on the first floor, then go down to the ground floor for the Romanian Art Gallery (the Mirror Hall is spectacular!). Allow at least 2 hours for the palace + 30 minutes for the Brancusi Center in the courtyard. Schedule is Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–18:00, closed on Monday.
