Official poster — International Shakespeare Festival Craiova 2026: WILL matters | Will breeds matter
For over four centuries, William Shakespeare's universe lives and reinvents itself — because entire generations have chosen to embody the "stuff as dreams are made on." In 2026, Craiova becomes his stage once again, for the 15th time since the first edition in 1994.
"We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep."
— William Shakespeare, The Tempest · The WILL matters theme stems from this ideaThe International Shakespeare Festival Craiova returns in 2026 with its 15th edition — the most ambitious in its 30-year existence. Under the theme WILL matters | Will breeds matter, the entire city transforms into an open stage. Not just the National Theatre, not just a few halls — but squares, parks, neighborhoods, surrounding communes, and every corner of Craiova that can host a story.
With 450 performances and events in over 60 venues, companies from over 30 countries and an international presence that eclipses Shakespearean festivals from London to Tokyo, Craiova has proven that the will to create excellence knows no geographical boundaries.
Festival Sections
🎭 A total urban experience — 8 sections, one cityThe festival is structured into complementary sections that cover all ages, all tastes, and all corners of the city. Each section has its own artistic identity — from elite productions by international companies to street performances and digital installations.
Shakespeare Indoor
🎭 Official international selection · TicketedShakespeare Indoor represents the backbone of the festival — the official competition and international selection section. Theatre companies from Asia, Europe, America, and Africa bring their boldest visions of Shakespeare's work to the stage of the Marin Sorescu National Theatre. Each show is a reinterpretation — no two productions are alike.
Indoor shows are presented with subtitles in Romanian and English. Some productions are in rare languages — Japanese, Arabic, Swahili, Hindi — adding an extra layer of cultural fascination. Seating is limited, making tickets sell out quickly, especially for premieres and opening/closing shows.
Purchase tickets for Shakespeare Indoor as soon as the program is announced (usually 8–10 weeks before). Weekend shows and those on the first and last days sell out first. Tickets available at contact@shakespearefestival.online and at the National Theatre box office.
Shakespeare Village
🎪 Free Entry · Music, dance, theatre under the open skyShakespeare Village is the vibrant and democratic heart of the festival — the place where anyone can become a spectator, without a ticket, without a reservation, without restrictions. An open-air stage in the center of Craiova with live music, street performances, physical theatre, contemporary dance, and spontaneous performances.
The Village atmosphere is unique: the audience sits on the grass, on steps, on the edge of fountains — or simply walks by and stops. Artists from 20+ countries mix with local artisans, food trucks with international cuisine, and light installations that transform the Craiova night into something else. This section is not reserved and not planned — it is lived.
Evenings from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM are the most animated — after the Indoor shows, the audience migrates to the Village, creating an electric energy impossible to replicate. Weekends are busier, while Monday–Wednesday are quieter and more intimate.
Squares & Metropolitan
🏙️ Theatre conquers the entire cityThrough Squares & Metropolitan, the festival refuses to stay within performance halls. Theatre goes out into the streets — into Craiova's central squares, residential neighborhoods, and surrounding communes that normally do not benefit from access to culture. Every corner of the city becomes a possible stage.
Metropolitan shows are specifically designed for unconventional spaces: apartment building stairs, park corners, industrial halls, and local markets. The WILL matters theme takes on a social dimension in this section — art reaches people who wouldn't normally seek it out, and they become spectators without having planned it.
Teen, Kids & Erasmus
🎓 Education through art · International youthYouth are at the center of attention for the 2026 edition. Through Shakespeare Teen, over 1,000 students from Craiova schools will transform Mihai Viteazu Square into a unique interactive multimedia installation — a Shakespeare lesson on the scale of an entire city.
Shakespeare Kids is the territory of Shakespearean play: age-appropriate shows, improvisation workshops, animation theatre, and a living library with stories from the Bard's works. Ideal for families with children between 4 and 12 years old.
Through Shakespeare & Erasmus, the University of Craiova welcomes 100+ students from 30 countries — they are not mere spectators, but co-creators: they participate in workshops, create their own artistic interventions in public spaces, and contribute to the documentation and dissemination of the festival at a European level.
Shakespeare Innovations
💡 New technologies meet Elizabethan theatreShakespeare Innovations is the section that looks to the future without forgetting the past. New technologies — virtual reality, holography, artificial intelligence, architectural mapping — are put at the service of Elizabethan texts, creating experiences that could not have existed in any other era.
Innovations installations occupy special spaces in the center of Craiova — historical buildings, squares, architectural facades. Mapping on the historical buildings in the civic center is one of the most photographed attractions of the festival. Projections on the facade of the National Theatre transform the night into a permanent spectacle, visible from hundreds of meters away.
Architectural mapping on the National Theatre and buildings in the center takes place after dark — 9:30 PM–11:00 PM. Bring a tripod if you're photographing — long exposures capture all the magic of the lights projected onto the stone.
30 Years of Festival — A World Heritage
📖 Initiated 1994 · The largest Shakespeare festival in the worldInitiated in 1994 by director Ion Caramitru and the Marin Sorescu National Theatre Craiova, the festival has grown steadily from a regional event to global recognition as the largest festival dedicated to Shakespeare in the world. Even before similar festivals in London or New York, Craiova understood that Shakespeare belongs to all cultures — not just the British one.
Over 30 years, the festival has hosted legendary companies: Théâtre du Soleil (Ariane Mnouchkine), Ninagawa Company (Yukio Ninagawa), Cheek by Jowl (Declan Donnellan), and productions from Japan, Iran, India, South Africa — a theatrical map of the world gathered on the stage in Oltenia. Each edition has brought a new cultural perspective to the same eternal texts.
"Craiova has created something that no other city in the world has achieved: a festival that proves Shakespeare is a universal language, not a British property."
